Homemade Hummus
Once you master this homemade hummus recipe you’ll never want to buy shop bought hummus again. Great for using up tins of chickpeas in the back of your store cupboard or panty. It’s the perfect work from home snack, great for kids and is an excellent all-rounder for picnics! I love mine with some toasted pitta bread or a selection of crudité. You can make your hummus with dried chickpeas but that will require soaking them overnight then cooking them for about an hour, by using tinned chickpeas you’ve got a quick, healthy snack that’s ready to eat in under 30 mins!
My top tip of super smooth hummus is to peel your chickpeas and add ice! Believe it or not, a couple of ice cubes really help to bind all the ingredients into a really smooth paste. Of course, if you prefer a chunkier hummus then you can just blend for less time.
Ingredients
400g tin of chickpeas
1 clove of garlic, crushed (if you like your hummus really garlicky then add an extra clove)
60ml tahini
1 lemon, juiced
1-2 Ice cubes
Salt
Olive oil (garnish)
Zaatar (garnish)
Method:
Drain your tin of chickpeas and pop them on the hob to cook for 10 mins. By cooking the chickpeas this will help you to have a smoother, creamier hummus.
Remove from the hob, drain the chickpeas and peel them. They have a very thin skin on them, you’ll see after cooking that some of the skins will have come loose. Take a handful of the chickpeas and gently rub them under running water and the skins should slip right off. You can discard the skin, and set the chickpeas aside. Allow them to cool completely before adding them to your blender. If you like your hummus chunky or a bit more grainy you can skip this step.
Pop your cooled chickpeas into a blender with the crushed garlic and blend together (at least 2 mins), do not be afraid of over blending - the longer you blend the smoother your hummus will be.
Add in your tahini, lemon juice, salt and ice cube, you then want to blend this for a good five minutes. Check to see if your hummus has a smooth consistency if it’s still a little on the grainy side add a teaspoon of hot water and continue to blend until it’s smooth.
