Hi, I’m Shamal, welcome to Cooking With Shamoo. I love to cook (and eat) and I’m a firm believer that food brings people together.
I’ve been cooking for as long as I can remember, helping my mum and nanee (maternal grandmother) in the kitchen to prepare dinner after school. It’s how I learned to cook and experiment with food. I’ve always loved cooking, trying different dishes and I love to travel, so food is always a big part of the trip for me.
My family is from Guyana, so many of my recipes are inspired by Caribbean cuisine. Big family dinners/parties were always a thing, whatever the occasion there was always food, people and music! These three things have been a constant throughout my life. There’s no question that sitting down with people and sharing food just makes you happier. A prime example is, after a long day at work going out for dinner with friends, having a good chat and listening to some great music can literally make that long day feel so much better.
Before Covid hit, my life was non-stop, I used to eat out at least four times a week, so the pause in life was very welcomed. It allowed me the time to stop and actually afforded me the time to get back in the kitchen and cook again. I found that many people had exhausted their repertoire of recipes and were tired of eating the same meals or having to cook 3 meals a day, it’s a lot! I also discovered a community of people that lived alone (me included) or had lost loved ones and were now living alone. Cooking for one can be quite a challenge, this inspired me to share my knowledge of cooking and create a space for people that wanted to find the joy in cooking again, learn some new recipes and quick tips to help make mealtimes easier.
I started to host a couple of cooking sessions with friends and finally set up a separate Instagram page for all my food-related content (there’s a lot of it), and that’s how this little venture was born.
